Synopsis
A sumptuous remake of the Dickens classic that previously had been filmed in black and white in 1917, 1934, and 1947 (the definitive version). This television adaptation was produced as a musical with an original score by Norman Sachs and Mel Mandel, but none of the songs appeared in the final print for reasons never explained.
Starring Michael York as Pip and Sarah Miles as Estella, the film was made for US television but was released to cinemas in the UK and broke with tradition by having the same actress (the thirty-three year old Sarah Miles) play both the younger and older Estella. Simon Gipps-Kent played the young Pip and the film also starred James Mason as Magwitch and Margaret Leighton as Miss Havisham, as well as Robert Morley; Joss Ackland; Rachel Roberts; Andrew Ray; Anthony Quayle and Heather Sears.
